Conversations on Conciousness: What the Best Minds Think About the Brain, Free Will, and What It Means to Be Human
Susan Blackmore

"The question What is consciousness? provokes all kinds of responses, ranging from jokes about psychedelic drugs to brow-furrowing discourses on life's meaning. Nearly everyone has an opinion, despite the lack of meaningful data explaining the phenomenon. Susan Blackmore posed this question to 21 leading scientists and philosophers who study consciousness for a living, compiling their responses into lively, though slightly repetitive, Q&A interviews.

"The heart of the science of consciousness is trying to understand the first-person perspective – to explain subjective experiences objectively." &mdash from the Scientific American review.

Bomb Scare: The History and Future of Nuclear Weapons
Joseph Cirincione

Cirincione begins with the first atomic discoveries of the 1930s and covers the history of their growth all the way to the current crisis with Iran. He unravels the science, strategy, and politics that have fueled the development of nuclear stockpiles and increased the chance of a nuclear terrorist attach. He explains why many nations choose not to pursue nuclear weapons, and outlines a solution to the world's proliferation problem.

The author is a major authority on this subject, perhaps one of the most important public issues in 21st century history.

Our discussion will be led by Book Club Editor Elaine Lynn.
